agricultural tourism. A visit to Chilliwack
is a chance to see something udderly fantastic, or corny, or colourful,
or fruitful. You name it eggs to emus, buffalos to bees it's
grown or produced on Chilliwack farms. And many local farmers sell their
bounty at the farm gate.
Part of Our History A Golden Past.... in 1858, 3,000 gold
seekers made their way to the newly opened gold bars of the Fraser River.
The gold they were seeking was located near the present day town of Yale.
Most of the gold seekers passed through Chilliwack, some on trails coming
from Washington State but most by paddle wheeler from the towns of Victoria
or New Westminster. Realizing that the grasslands in Chilliwack area offered
greater opportunities for creating wealth through farming rather than by
the arduous job of sluicing and panning for gold, some of these gold seekers
stayed.
Welcome to the Farm Udderly Fantastic....
Farming has been a way of life in Chilliwack for well over a hundred years.
Our vibrant agricultural sector offers you an opportunity to see and experience
working farms involved in a wide range of sometimes surprising agricultural
activities. On your travels through Chilliwack, you can't miss seeing large
black-and-white cows. These are Holsteins. They're the reason, along with
rich grass and corn, that Chilliwack produces large volumes of the best
low-fat milk in the world. Watch for several locations throughout Chilliwack
to try delicious local ice cream and other dairy products.
A-Mazing but Corny.... If you happen
to be in our community from late July through September, don't miss out
on an opportunity to enjoy some famous Chilliwack sweet corn. Roadside stands
will have a wide variety of fresh corn-on-the-cob available, and if you
can't see the corn patch for the corn stalks, you've stumbled into the Original
Chilliwack Corn Maize. This amazing attractions provide you with acres of
corn in which to go a-mazing. Corn maizes are a fun place to get lost. Finding
the lone exit can prove challenging, so we might not find you until fall
harvest.
Group
Tours and Educational Visits.... Chilliwack is the perfect location
to create educational agricultural experiences for tour operators and school
groups. The relaxed, rural lifestyle and diversity of agri-tourism products
and experiences will enhance any itinerary, and won't soon be forgotten.
